Your Excellency,
‘English Indult’
In the context of the 50th anniversary of the ‘English Indult’ which passed late last year I thought you might be interested to see the documents held in the archive of the Latin Mass Society.
Surprisingly, the Archivist of the Archdiocese of Westminster, Fr Nicholas Schofield, informs me that they have nothing on the subject, so I am sending him a copy as well.
The Latin Mass Society’s own Archivist suggests these documents had been faxed to us, which may explain why they are a little faint. It is useful none the less to see the date (5th November 1971) and Protocol Number (1897/71).
The Indult is of course referenced in various places, for example Annibale Bugnini, Reform of the Liturgy 1948-1975, pp297-8 (English edition), and the same author’s posthumously published memoirs, Liturgiae Cultor et Amator, pp85-6. Archbishop Bugnini was at that time the Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship.
The Indult is also referred to in a report on the ‘Tridentine Mass’ in Notitiae 185 [1981], pp589-611, at pp606-608.
I have the honour to remain Your Excellency’s child in Christ,
Joseph Shaw

Letters from the Congregation for Divine Worship to Cardinal Heenan, dated 5th November 1971.
